Why is one-half of the box wider than the other half of the box?

Answer:

In the box plot of data representation, the box represents 50% or one-half of the data and the center point is the median of the given data. Each smaller box with a median point as a divider represents 25% or one-fourth of the total data. So if one-half of the box is wider than the other half, this means that the spread of data or range of that half box is larger as compared to the other half box.

Range of wider box = 27.5 – 21 = 6.5

Range of smaller box = 21 – 17.5 = 3.5

The Spread of data in a wider box will be greater than smaller box.

The box plots show the distribution of times spent shopping by two different groups.
